At 1.7 million square kilometers, Alaska is the largest state by surface area in the U.S. The 49th state borders Canada to the east and Russia, via the Bering Strait, to the west. Much of the state is uninhabited thanks to its frozen tundra, with about half of the 723,000 population living in the city of Anchorage.
Despite its perception as a frozen tundra or barren wasteland, Alaska has plenty of attractions to offer visitors, one of the reasons it has become a favored destination amongst cruise-goers.
